The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) released surveillance video of a shootout that happened on one of their busses Friday. The shootout, which happened May 18, after a passenger Omari Tobias, 22, asked the driver, David Fullard, to make an unscheduled stop as the bus traveled through Charlotte’s Steele Creek neighborhood. Fullard refused, saying they were not at a bus stop and continued driving. After taunting Fullard, Tobias pulled a gun on the driver, at which point Fullard pulled his gun and fired at Tobias. Most of the argument and ensuing gunfight happened while the bus was in motion and carrying other passengers.
At some point during the gun fight, Tobias was hit in the abdomen and Fullard was hit in the arm.
Fullard has since been fired by CATS and is currently not facing any charges.
In a statement, CATS said in part it is against policy for an employee to have a weapon on its property or while doing his job. Fullard’s attorney said his client had a gun because he did not feel safe on the job.
Tobias was taken to the hospital to address his injury, but was released and put in jail on numerous charges.
